Villainous Plans in Equestria that ended in failure, but for different reasons:

Discord in Return of Harmony: Decided to set up a Maze Game to make The Mane 6 go to the extreme end of their Elements of Harmony, and start acting as those exaggerations of their elements opposite, and sends the characters on A Wild Goose Chase to find their Elements of Harmony, only to get themselves "Discorded." Then he sends them to Ponyville at Twilight's library to get The Elements, only to find they don't work because they aren't in Harmony, and all of them don't represent their Elements at the Moment... Yet Discord doesn't take said Elements away, and just goes to sit on his Throne because he's "boss" instead? And yet he never thought that they might bounce back at some point, mostly because he left a few loose ends: Twilight still has The Elements, The other Mane 6 are still around in homes close or nearby, Celestia still lives, and They have of all things, Time. Discord gets turned back to Stone in the End, because Twilight still has the Elements and gets her friends back to normal, in no rush or hurry, because Celestia has The Letters of Friendship Lessons that Twilight wrote to get her out of her depression, and still could find The other Mane 6 with ease, because they don't live far away or are hard to get to, and taking any of those loose ends away would have made this more difficult, and almost impossible to reach. Discord left too much room open to win.

Chrysalis in Canterlot Wedding: She took Cadence's place, acted like a usual person who's overly stressed and blunt about weddings not going her way, and might seem a little bitchy. Twilight knows something is different about her and how she's not acting right, and even though The other Mane 6 should usually listen to her when she has worry, The difference between that time and now, is that Twilight is now acting over protective of her brother, they never knew Cadence until now, she's only acting like a normal bride who's stressed and might be very harsh towards people, and that's just how people work. Not only that, but Shining talking down to her after making Cadence cry out of the room, Shining was the husband who was with her, and knew what was personally going on. At least, the characters are supposed to see and realize this. But when they are out of the room and Twilight's crying about this, Chrysalis takes initiative to send Twilight to a place no one will ever find her, because The others have The Wedding to focus on, Twilight might just be respecting her Brother's wish to not come to the wedding because Twilight may be over protective, but she's not cruel enough to just ruin a wedding for no reason other then she doesn't believe it would work. She's in the same place as The Real Cadence, and Chrysalis might've made it possible that Twilight would've killed the Cadence, if not for the Secret Handshake the two have. The two are almost there, so Chrysalis had guards on standby, and they would have gotten the two, if not for a random bouquet of Flowers Cadence had found. So when out of proof to keep herself as the Real Cadence, she reveals and starts gloating, most likely buying her troops time to break the shield around Canterlot. Then Celestia attacks and gets into a struggle with Chrysalis, who wins because of Shining's Love for Cadence, which Chrysalis didn't know was that powerful. So as the Troops come down, The Mane 6 have to go get The Elements of Harmony, fighting a force guarding it, only to find another force guarding said Elements' Safe. All of The Bases were covered, and Chrysalis would've won in the end, if not for Twilight getting Cadence free and bringing Shining Back to his own mind. The writers wrote themselves in a corner, and had to get out with this last part happening, which lead to Shining and Cadence ripping off Domon Kasshu and Rain from G Gundam with a Sekiha Love Love Tenkyoken. Not much room open to beat Chrysalis there, so she was The Closest to reaching her goal more then any other villain, even Tirek.
Just something I wrote up today, just to give my opinions and analysis on how These Two's Plans worked, and what I felt needed to be said on both of them.

Honestly, I always saw Discord's plan as being at least a bit "smarter" than Chrissy's. I felt he planned things better, and actually had more success up until the very end. Chrysalis came close to success, no doubt, but she relied quite a bit on spur of the moment thinking, and even a bit of luck.
